Storms are a common occurrence throughout Otago and may bring high winds, heavy rain, flooding, snow or coastal storm surges. The frequency, intensity and duration of storms are difficult to predict. Some communities may be at risk from several types of storm hazards.

Damaging wind can be caused by several of the weather patterns that regularly flow over Otago. A strong wind warning is issued by the MetService when winds of more than 87km/hr are expected over land. These warnings are sent to media, Civil Defence and emergency management staff.
Severe winds can affect power and telecommunications networks, uproot trees, and peel off a roof. High-sided vehicles such as trucks and campervans are at risk, especially when driven by visitors or people with limited knowledge of local conditions.
Extreme sea levels occur through a combination of tides, storm surge and wind conditions. Storm surges can accelerate coastal erosion, flood coastal communities, destroy homes, and strand travellers.
Flooding can also occur inland as the surge enters estuaries and lagoons, impeding normal river flows and keeping river levels higher than normal. If severe weather has already been experienced inland, then these rivers may already be high, increasing the risk or extent of flooding.
Snow storms can occur through most parts of Otago at any time, cutting off communities for days. Power can take weeks to be restored and telecommunications networks can also be affected. Rural communities are familiar with these problems, often having lived with severe weather patterns for generations. Having back-up generators and alternative forms of heating at the ready is important in these rural areas, because of their exposure to severe weather.
Dunedin experiences snowfalls most years as do many other Otago townships. People rely heavily on power, and some people may not be familiar with their local climate or know their neighbours.
Severe weather can cause major damage to property. Keeping your insurance up-to-date will make recovery easier.
